Updated! Am I getting a good deal??

So looks like I may get this one for $10,000CDN Any input? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v135/partsman/99dodge.jpg The dealer so far has had to do the brakes, replace the steering box, do an alignment and I want the A/C done, it is not cool enough as far as I am concerned. I need to find out how to find what all is in it, such as diffs, ratio and transfer case and such, I gather it must be a part time 4X4 as there is a shifter but no locking of hubs that I saw. it is an auto, so have to figure which one, it is at a Ford dealer. 1999 RAM 2500 TRUCK 4DR EXT CAB Color: RED VIN: 3B7KF23ZXXG129785 $13,994 Odometer: 150,403

RE: Transyn or other TES-295 oil

I wonder if it will work in a 1977 Ford F-250 with a C6, we have it in a tank in the shop, about 4000Litres, Hmmm.

RE: Going alone (gulp)

Well I am sure you will do fine, I started out with small trips usually within an hour of the house or so, and on one solo trip to park the fifth wheel and then later gather the family I almost took out a picnic table while backing up, but because I did the slow and easy thing was able to see the danger in time. Learn to look and if you need to, back up a bit then check to see how you are doing. Don't rush it, at least double check things if by yourself and you should do fine, remember your height/clearance, low branches, stuff like that, and if you have push/slide outs, allow space to open them up. I am still a relatively new person to pulling a fifth wheel, bought used in 2005 and have taken a total of probably five trips, it does get easier, but stay alert.

RE: Plastic plug in Atwood water heater

Well when I went to the RV supplier for a new plastic plug they sold me a brass reducer that comes with a draincock, just like some of the radiators in vehicles come with, that is what they say to use, and it was cheaper than buying the plastic plugs that can only be bought in a two pack. funny thing is, I had all the stuff at work to do that.

RE: Motorcycle carrier on back of 5th wheel

I bought a fifth wheel used, I think the one reason I got such a good deal on it, is the fact it had a very large and heavy motorcycle carry on it that I assume the original owner made, just having it on there screwed up the balance, so cut the darn thing off, so this year should be a lot better towing, although it sure gave a lot of protection from backing into things or someone hitting the back.

RE: Question about tire air pressure.

Lots of advice to mull over, I find that on my vehicles that the pressures change, the sticker on the vehicle says what was good with original tires, the tires we get now are different again on the pressure they recommend, just like my fifth wheel, the sticker on the outside says 32 Psi Max, but the tire dealer sold me ones that are good to 50PSI and that is what they put in and recommend. Trailer is from 1989, tires from 2005, so things change.

RE: How long should 5er tires last?

Well thanks to this site I finally know my tires are 2205 and that means mine were made in the 22nd week of 2005, they are Maxiis in 13" suggested as good replacements for the Marathons that I had that were loosing chunks of tread. They appear to be a good set, a lot of people I talk to seem to like them, but yes they are made in China. Time will tell I guess.

RE: Tire pressure loss

Thanks for the feedback, good point on temperature, as they were done in July and that sat in my truck till I got home and they were reading over 50 after being in the sun at that time. But I guess I am so used to my car, which I do check more often that this sounded odd, but going by what you are saying then mine is normal for that length of storage.

RE: Don't think I have space for second battery.

Now that you mention it, I do have a supply of 8D batteries I could draw from. Hmmm, wonder if the roof would take the weight?:h

Tire pressure loss

So getting fifth wheel ready for this summer, when and if it comes. And the tires I know the dealer filled to 50PSI are only reading 37-38 PSI, now granted we did not use the rig last year, so it has sat for a while, but to drop down that low, is that what most of you find?

RE: Do these really work? Fridgecool

I thought you meant you wanted to run the fridge on 12 volt like my old camper which would kill the batteries, but for running off the propane you would just turn on batteries, I don't have a switch to take batteries off line, mine are on the whole time it is sitting in the back yard, just I keep it plugged in so the batteries are kept up. So yes turn batteries on and fire up fridge on propane, I don't think the fridge draws that much on start up, once the igniter does its job the battery is probably not used until the fridge for some reason goes out and the igniter has to kick in again. Now the furnace requires the battery to be up and supplying power the whole time, due to the fan having to cycle on and off.

RE: Do these really work? Fridgecool

I plug my unit in the night before at least, I have a friend and co-worker that once the season starts he does not turn his fridge off. Anyway, mine gets at least a day of being plugged in, all food comes from either the fridge or the freezer already cold or frozen as required then it gets put in either the day before we leave or the morning we leave and I don't run the fridge untill we get to our spot, and so far on 6 or 8 hour trips we have no problem keeping food. As for turning on the fridge on batteries, he would kill your batteries if sitting, so won't work that way, if you can't access electricity then you would have to put the propane on and fire it up on propane. Mine on electric is turning a knob to on, propane I have to turn to gas on then push and hold a button while it ignites, then after the light goes out I let the button go and that should be it.

RE: Can one get a key for this door lock?

Good points made, I just figured two locks would be more secure, but like on a house, the deadbolt is probably all I really need. Thanks for the replies.:)

RE: Don't think I have space for second battery.

Thanks for the replies, the picture is the front of the fifth wheel and is the only storage compartment this 1989 18.5 Prowler Lynx has, there is a hole about two inches in the floor with some mesh over it, so that is their idea of venting I gather.

Electric brakes Emergency flasher and break away Question

OOPS! Sorry 1977 F-250 Super Cab Almost forgot to ask these questions, Put left or right turn signal on with fifth wheel hooked up to test everything for the upcoming season and no problems, but hit the emergency flasher and brakes make a sound like they are going on and off, what is the cause of that? Would appear to be not a good thing if driving for some reason with them on. Also, pulled breakaway cable and did not hear any noise from brakes, should one not hear the same noise one hears when the brake pedal is pushed to apply brakes? Or does the brake away fully apply them right now and they don't hum?? Thanks.

RE: Do these really work? Fridgecool

So if I was to mount some computer fans just under the cap at the top of the rig, will that work well? I would imagine I could tap into the 12volts and when on shore power it would still feed power to keep them going?

RE: Whats Your Real Weights? Truck and Trailer. The Real Deal

Okay, so here is a picture of my label on the fifth wheel, I gather it is telling me what each axle will take and total weight. Am I correct? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v135/partsman/IMG_0054.jpg

Don't think I have space for second battery.

Have a group 24 battery in my fifth wheel now, checks out good and I picked up a group 27 brand new, but appears I will not be able to fit them both in the storage area, anybody else have a tight area and find a way to mount two 12Volt batteries? My other option I thought would be keep one under my hood of the truck as I set up two batteries back when I carried a camper, so that way both would be kept charged while traveling and then the spare would be kept charged while driving around after reaching destination and then just swap as needed. Any thoughts on this? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v135/partsman/IMG_0048.jpg

Can one get a key for this door lock?

I have a key for the top deadbolt, but I kinda would like to have a key that would also work the bottom lock, any idea if there is a way of finding out what key would work? Did they number them or what? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v135/partsman/IMG_0050.jpg
